Moissanite Information

Lab created Moissanite is a beautiful and durable gemstone. Malashocks would like to share some Moissanite information with you that will answer many of the questions that we are frequently asked and help ensure maximum enjoyment from your Moissanite jewelry.

Malashocks has been selling lab created Moissanite for 8 years and we are a Charles and Colvard Platinum jeweler. Here is some information regarding this stone that you may find useful.

All Moissanite used in jewelry is lab created. Since natural Moissanite is not available in the quality and quantity that would be usable for jewelry, it should be assumed that any gemstone referred to as Moissanite is, in fact, lab created.

Since lab created Moissanite is nearly colorless, extremely bright and very hard, it is often used as a substitute for diamond. Because of this, you will usually see lab created Moissanite listed by actual millimeter size or equivalent diamond weight (edw). This weight refers to the equivalent weight of a diamond with comparable physical size, not the actual weight of the Moissanite.

Moissanite is extremely hard. Hardness refers to a gemstone's ability to resist scratching. Scratches cause light to scatter off of the surface of a gemstone, making it appear cloudy or foggy. A very hard gemstone like lab created Moissanite or Diamond can often be worn for a lifetime without any appreciable decrease in its brilliance or beauty.

While Moissanite is often listed as excellent for toughness, our experience indicates its toughness is actually closer to that of most colored stones. Toughness refers to a gemstone's ability to resist structural damage such as chipping or breaking. As with all fine jewelry, you should avoid exposing your Moissanite to impact or unnecessary force.

Lab created Moissanite can be cleaned using any commercially available fine jewelry cleaner or your favorite fine jewelry cleaning technique. Occasionally we have seen an effect similar to tarnish form on the surface of a stone. This appears to be a chemical reaction, most likely occurring when the stone comes into contact with certain lotions or soaps. This effect is typically very faint and is most often seen when looking at the stone at an angle in bright light. The effect is not permanent and can be removed relatively easily at home; however, regular cleaners will typically not work. Please call us for simple instructions for removing this apparent oxidation. As with all fine jewelry, removing the jewelry before putting on cosmetics, perfumes or other chemical products is highly recommended.
